💬 That’s Interesting. Tell Me More.
The five best words you can hear a customer say are, “That’s interesting. Tell me more.”
When you get a customer to engage, you’ve caught their attention. They’re listening and responding. They’re having a conversation.
‍Conversations are powerful because they build relationships.
One of the greatest obstacles to your business is customer indifference. You may be passionate about your business and its capabilities, but that doesn’t mean anyone else cares.
The majority of prospects you come across are perfectly content. They are making decisions and solving problems on a daily basis. They have their preferred suppliers, and they know how to get things done. From their point of view, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”
As competition increases, human connections become even more valuable.Â
Selling on price is no way to grow a brand. Build strong relationships with your customers so they know your business, like it, and trust it.
A conversation is one of the most human ways to form a relationship.
Flip your marketing to provoke a conversation. You’ll know it’s working when people say, “That’s interesting. Tell me more.”

📼 Hack Your Autoresponders
The next time someone asks you, “How are you today?”, change your autoresponder. Instead of saying good, busy, or great, respond with a new phrase: “Spectacular!”
So much of our communication is unconscious and programmatic. We intuitively create canned responses for routine interactions to make our lives easier.
A simple tactic to spark engagement is to hack your autoresponders.
Try it out: Imagine we just met and I ask, “How are you today?” Say it out loud: “Spectacular!”
Almost immediately, you will notice how an unexpected response triggers small conversations. People aren’t anticipating “spectacular.” They’ll pause, take notice, and they may even inquire why.
Initiating small conversations is why you hack your autoresponders. Getting someone to pause and engage creates a little space, and that can be all you need to steer them toward something greater: a meeting, a discussion, a sale, or a relationship.

đź’ĄÂ Spark Engagement
Balanced is boring, and boring is forgettable. Take a stance to spark engagement.
Finish some of these statements to test what your company believes:
- We believe…
- Our competitors get it wrong, because…
- What frustrates us about our industry is…
- What surprises most people about our approach is…
- We never want to be associated with…
- People commonly say this, but we think it’s actually…
- What gets me most excited about our industry is…
- The biggest risk to our customers is…
Which of these statements triggered the strongest response? Where did you lean in and have a few things to say? That’s a good signal for what you should be discussing in your marketing.
People may not agree with your company’s opinions, but they won’t ignore them either. Your opinions make your company more interesting and give it that spark to generate a conversation.
